The Cubs fall to 1-2 on the season with a tough 5-4 loss to the Pirates.
Thoughts on the Game
Positives
1. Matt Garza had a career high 12 strikesouts while walking none in 7 innings.
2. Despite being outhit by the Pirates the Cubs still entered the 9th inning with a one run lead.
3. Starlin Castro had another 3 hits raising his average to .615.
Negatives.
1. The Cubs blew a 9th inning lead in a game that they probably should have won.
2. Castro made an ill advised throw to first in the 9th inning that ultimately allowed Walker to score what turned out to be the winning run for the Pirates.
3. Marlon Byrd had a bad day at the plate going 1 for 5 with two strikeouts and grounded into the game ending double play with the potential tying run at third base.
4. Matt Garza battled but gave a career high 12 hits in 7 innings.
Overall this will probably end up being one of the Cubs worst losses of the year.
They are simply making too many mistakes to win games. They need to improve their fundamentals or this is going to be a long season.
