Shaun Marcum and Brewers Avoid Salary Arbitration

February 9, 2011

The Brewer Beat Blog is reporting Shaun Marcum and the Brewers avoided arbitration agreeing to a 1-year $3.95 deal.

http://brewersbeat.mlblogs.com/archives/2011/0

In my opinion this a bargain for the Brewers considering the numbers Marcum put in a very tough American League East in 2008 and 2010.

SportsIllustrated.com is reporting Joba Chamberlain will start 2011 in the Yankees bullpen.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/baseba

Sergio Mitre will likely be the fifth starter on the Yankees depth chart going into Spring Training. It is safe to say Mitre will little margin for error in the starting rotation. If he falters early the Chamberlain to the starting rotation rumors are sure to start.

Jered Weaver & Angels Go to Salary Arbitration

February 9, 2011

The Press-Enterpise is reporting Jered Weaver and the Angels have gone to salary arbitration. Weaver is asking $8.8 million and the Angels are offering $7.365 million.

http://blogs.pe.com/sportsbreak/2011/02/wea

In five seasons with the Angels, Weaver has posted a 64-39 record with a very respectable 3.55 ERA and 1.205 WHIP.

With the going to rate for quality starters well over $10 million per season Weaver seems likely to be awarded the $8.8 million in my opinion.

The arbiters decision is expected on Thursday.

Rockies Reportedly Out on Michael Young.

February 9, 2011

Troy E Renck of the Denver Post is reporting the Rockies are likely out of the Michael Young trade market.

http://www.denverpost.com/rockies/ci_17333724

This is interesting as the Rockies had been thought to be the front runner for Young the past few days.

The Rangers are said to want a proven player or top prospect in any deal for Young. It seems unlikely many teams would be willing to part with top talent for the right to pay the $48 million owed to the 34 year-old Young over the next 3 years.

The Young story has quickly risen to the #2 story behind the Albert Pujols contract negotiations.

This story will continue to grow as spring training approaches.
